Following in the footsteps of her fellow band mates Emma Bunton and Victoria Beckham, Mel B announced yesterday that she too is expecting the patter of tiny feet.
The ex Scary Spice announced through glossy magazine ‘Hello!’ that she is expecting her first child with second husband Stephen Belafonte this summer. Miss Brown, who has two children, Phoenix Chi, 12 and Angel, 3 from previous relationships said of the news: "We’re really excited. We wouldn’t have planned and waited for four years to have a baby if we weren’t really excited about it and ready for it. Even though you can never really be truly ready." The couple, who have been married for 4 years began trying for a baby around Christmas and have said they were surprised to conceive so quickly.
Although currently bringing up a brood of girls including Stephen’s daughter, Giselle, 6, from a previous relationship, the couple have said to be unsure as to whether they want to know the sex of their baby before the birth. Mel says: "I haven’t fully decided if I want to know or not. I’m over the first trimester, so I’m past the shady three months and to safe territory." Of finding out the news his wife was expecting their first child together, Stephen said: "I promptly got a bottle of Cristal champagne and said, ‘Baby, enjoy this glass because you can’t drink anymore!’"
The news was announced just days after the 35 year old singer revealed her hopes to become pregnant in the near future. Last week she told Reveal magazine "I’m always broody. Hopefully, I’m going to be pregnant by the end of this year, or, if not, next year. I love kids." The new addition to the Brown/Belafonte clan is just one of many celebrity babies to be born this summer including band mates Emma Bunton who is due in May and Victoria will with give birth to her first daughter in July. Other celebrity expectant mothers include Oscar Winner Natalie Portman, model Jodie Kidd and actress Kate Hudson who is expecting her first child with Muse front man, Matt Belamy.
Three years ago, Brown was at the head of media frenzy when she became pregnant by American actor Eddie Murphy during their short-lived fling. Upon discovering she was pregnant; Murphy immediately ended the relationship and claimed not to be the father of the unborn child. Once paternity tests showed he was in fact the father, Murphy was forced to pay support to Miss Brown and her newborn daughter.
Mel has never tried to hide her hopes of the band coming back for another album following the huge success of their reunion in early 2008. There has been speculation that a new tour will not take place as Victoria Beckham has catapulted her way into mainstream designer fashion whereas the other members have begun new careers, with Miss Bunton being successful as a TV presenter. The other members have rubbished reports they will be reforming but Brown remains optimistic: "I’d love to get back with the Spice Girls. I’ve always championed more Spice Girls concerts, DVDs and music."
