One of the main worries a woman may have throughout her pregnancy is when she will regain her figure post-birth. There are some who may think that by eating less, they will gain less weight and although this may be true, this is not the safe option for you or your baby. However, by continuing with light exercise throughout your pregnancy with the professional advice of your doctor and a fitness expert, you can maintain your fitness, limit the amount of weight you gain throughout your pregnancy and be able to snap back into shape quicker following the birth of your baby.

For years, yoga has been an extremely popular form of exercise for both men and women, with further studies showing that the practice of yoga can be integral throughout and following a woman’s pregnancy. For expectant mothers who are especially anxious, practicing yoga can help to keep you well balanced both in mind and body.

Yoga is a great way in which to teach ourselves to listen to our bodies, free out mind of negative or consuming thoughts which in turn, will help us to be a more serene and calm individual. It can also help to relieve the aches and discomfort that come from being pregnant, aiding circulation which in turn can help to reduce swelling which will provide baby with more blood and oxygen. As the mothers belly swells, she may also find she has difficulty breathing throughout the latter stages of pregnancy. Yoga teaches us that we can breathe into our belly, back and ribs in order to maintain deep breathing which can help to reduce pregnancy related stress. One of the most common complaints an expectant mother will have during her pregnancy is lower back pain which is caused by the spine being placed in a different position as a direct result of extra weight. Yoga helps to elongate the spine, by stretching it out and making it stronger which can help to relieve lower back pain. This in turn can help mothers deal with the demands of their baby post-birth as their body will be stronger.

In addition to practice throughout your pregnancy, yoga can also be utilized during labor and if you practice yoga for a prolonged period of time prior to labor, you may experience an increased level of flexibility within your hips and increase strength in your abdominals. Breathing is essential in helping the body cope with the demands of childbirth and the practice of yoga can help mothers get through the most painful stages of both the labor and delivery. By utilizing your yoga breathing techniques with the practices of clearing the mind, yoga can help you to become less anxious and controlling over the labor process, allowing you to open your mind and embrace the event. Finally, by practicing yoga, your mind will become clearer and calmer which can help eliminate panicking during pregnancy which may cause distress to baby during childbirth.

There are a number of celebrities who are embracing the practice of yoga throughout their pregnancy, such as Charmed actress, Alyssa Milano. Milano, 38 is currently pregnant with her first child with husband Dave Bugliari which she announced on her Twitter account only last month: ‘Yes it’s true. And we couldn’t be happier. Thank you for your warm wishes and love!’ Looking radiant and blooming, yoga clearly seems to agree with Milano’s growing bump.
